Krill are small crustaceans, similar to shrimps, which live in the ocean. Krill oil, which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, is extracted from the krill and used in supplements like MegaRed®.
How much krill oil is in MegaRed®?
MegaRed® is made from 100% pure krill oil, which is a valuable, natural source of omega-3 fatty acids. Although krill are one of the most common living creatures on the planet, only Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) are used to produce MegaRed®.
Why Antarctic krill?
Antarctic krill live in huge swarms in the Antarctic Ocean. Thanks to the clean and barely-polluted waters of this habitat, these small shrimp-like crustaceans are particularly pure.
Is the krill in MegaRed® sourced from sustainable fisheries?
MegaRed® only uses krill from independently-certified, sustainable fisheries. You can see this from the blue MSC mark on every pack.
Why is krill oil red?
Krill oil obtains its red colour from astaxanthin, which is a naturally-occurring substance in the phytoplankton eaten by krill. Astaxanthin provides protection for the krill against oxidation, which in turn protects the valuable omega-3 fatty acids from damage meaning there is no need for added preservatives in MegaRed® products.
How is krill oil different from fish oil?
The omega-3s found in krill oil are in the form of phospholipids, which are key structural components of human cells, and are more easily absorbed and utilised by the body, leaving no fishy odour or aftertaste. Omega-3 found in fish oil is in the form of triglycerides which the body must convert before it can be absorbed and utilised effectively.
